How to Get to Puerto Miguel from Iquitos

There are two ways to reach Puerto Miguel, depending on whether you value speed or a more authentic Amazon experience.

Fast Option (3–4 Hours)

This is the quickest and most convenient way to reach Puerto Miguel.

From Iquitos, take a mototaxi to the departure point for Nauta, then continue by taxi or bus to the town of Nauta.

Once in Nauta, take a mototaxi to the river port. From there, you can board a local boat to Puerto Miguel, either Balsa Mateo or Balsa Robert.

For a safer and more reliable journey, we recommend traveling with Mr. Charles, Mr. Dante, or Mr. Johnny, who make the trip to Puerto Miguel almost every day, usually departing between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m.

Slow Option (5–12 Hours) – Our Recommended Experience

If you want to experience the Amazon as locals do, this is the option we recommend.

Board a cargo boat (lancha) from the Port of Iquitos to Pucallpa, enjoying a leisurely journey along the Amazon River to Puerto Miguel, surrounded by rainforest, riverside villages, and the ever-changing scenery of the jungle. Travelers typically spend the trip relaxing in comfortable hammocks while taking in the sights and sounds of the Amazon.

A faster alternative is the local "rápido" (a river speedboat), which completes the journey in approximately 5 hours. While it significantly reduces travel time, it doesn't offer the same immersive experience as the traditional passenger boats.

Puerto Miguel Community

Gateway to the Authentic Amazon

Deep in the Peruvian Amazon, where life flows to the rhythm of the rivers, lies Puerto Miguel, a small riverside community offering one of the most authentic Amazon experiences still untouched by mass tourism.

Here, every journey begins on the water. Every sunrise awakens the rainforest. Every moment invites you to reconnect with nature in its purest form.

An Extraordinary Location

Puerto Miguel enjoys one of the most privileged locations in the Peruvian Amazon.

Just five minutes by boat from the village begins the area of influence of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, the largest protected flooded forest in South America, covering more than 2 million hectares of pristine rainforest.

This remarkable ecosystem is home to an extraordinary diversity of wildlife, including pink river dolphins, Amazonian manatees, giant river otters, black caimans, monkeys, sloths, anacondas, hundreds of bird species, and thousands of plant species that flourish within its seasonal floodplains.

Only 30 minutes by boat from Puerto Miguel lies one of South America's greatest geographical landmarks: the official source of the Amazon River, where the mighty Ucayali and Marañón Rivers merge to form the world's largest river by volume.

Witnessing the meeting of these legendary waterways is one of the defining experiences of any journey through the Peruvian Amazon.

The Heritage of the Kukama-Kukamiria

Beyond its exceptional natural surroundings, Puerto Miguel is deeply connected to the rich heritage of the Kukama-Kukamiria people, one of the most important Indigenous cultures of the Loreto region.

Often known as the master fishermen of the Amazon, the Kukama have spent centuries developing an extraordinary understanding of the rivers, floodplain forests, lakes, wildlife, and the seasonal cycles that shape life throughout the rainforest.

Their language belongs to the Tupi-Guaraní language family, while their worldview sees rivers as living beings that connect the physical and spiritual worlds.

For the Kukama, water is not simply a natural resource, it is the very origin of life. Their oral traditions tell of the sacred Lupuna tree, whose fall gave birth to the Amazon River, reflecting a profound respect for nature that continues to inspire their culture today.

Experience the Living Rainforest

Life in Puerto Miguel follows the timeless rhythm of the Amazon.

At dawn, countless tropical birds announce the beginning of a new day as local fishermen navigate the river using traditional techniques passed down through generations.

Throughout the day, visitors can explore hidden creeks, paddle through flooded forests, observe wildlife in its natural habitat, discover medicinal plants, or simply embrace the peaceful silence of one of the world's last great wildernesses.

As darkness falls, the rainforest transforms once again.

Under remarkably clear night skies, the sounds of frogs, insects, and nocturnal birds fill the forest while black caimans quietly emerge along the riverbanks. Night excursions reveal an entirely different side of the Amazon, hidden from view during daylight hours.

A place to explore

Puerto Miguel is an ideal base for unforgettable Amazon experiences, including birdwatching, wildlife photography, canoe expeditions, sustainable fishing experiences, rainforest walks, cultural encounters with local families who continue to preserve the traditions and knowledge of the Amazon.

The Amazon, as it has always been, there are no crowds,no busy roads and no commercial tourism.

Instead, you'll discover something far more valuable, an authentic Amazon where nature, culture, and history remain inseparably connected.

At Euphooorea, we invite you to experience this extraordinary place with respect, curiosity, and a genuine connection to the rainforest and the people who call it home.

Puerto Miguel is more than a destination, it is your gateway to the true Amazon.
