Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose Puerto Miguel instead of other Amazon destinations?
Unlike many Amazon destinations, where travelers simply visit Iquitos or stay in traditional lodges with fixed schedules and curated activities, few ever experience the true rhythm of the rainforest or connect meaningfully with its people, traditions, and culture.
Puerto Miguel offers a different path. Untouched by mass tourism, with the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve just minutes away, the official source of the Amazon River within easy reach, and a deep connection to Kukama culture, it invites guests to experience the Amazon as it truly is, authentic, immersive, community-based, and sustainable. It is the kind of genuine Amazon experience that is becoming increasingly rare to find.
What other destinations should I visit in the Peruvian Amazon?
The Peruvian Amazon is incredibly diverse, and each region offers its own unique landscapes, cultures, and experiences. Beyond Puerto Miguel, we highly recommend exploring Caballococha, one of the Amazon's best-kept secrets.
Located near the triple border of Peru, Colombia, and Brazil, Caballococha provides a fascinating blend of cultures, traditions, and ecosystems. The surrounding region is ideal for rainforest trekking, birdwatching, wildlife observation, sport fishing, and visiting remote Indigenous communities. Its extensive network of rivers, oxbow lakes, and untouched forests makes it a remarkable destination for travellers seeking authentic adventures away from conventional tourist routes.
Caballococha is also the gateway to the Yavarí River, one of the Amazon's most pristine waterways, renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and remote wilderness. The area offers outstanding opportunities for photography, kayaking, camping, and immersive expeditions into one of the least-explored regions of the Peruvian Amazon.
Together, Puerto Miguel and Caballococha create a unique itinerary, allowing visitors to experience two very different faces of the Amazon, from the flooded forests of the Pacaya Samiria region and the official source of the Amazon River to the wild frontier landscapes of the Peru–Brazil–Colombia border.
For travellers seeking a deeper connection with the Amazon, combining both destinations offers one of the most complete and authentic rainforest experiences in Peru.
